Hello lovely people!
What is the best thing to do on a beautiful Spring morning in New York? 13.1 miles through Central Park, of course. Well, it was the perfect way for a crazy Aussie to kick off the day!
There’s a race almost every weekend in Central Park, but today was different. The guys had the weekend off and the ladies had an exclusive race. The More Magazine/Fitness magazine Women’s Half Marathon. Awesome. I’ve never done anything like this before, you know, women’s only racing. It was cool to be a part of something different.
First of all, I don’t think I’ve ever lined up so close to the start of a race in New York. It was so exciting!! Turns out this was both good and bad. Hearing the horn go off and racing immediately reminded me of high school athletics – nice dose of nostalgia. Only problem, I’m not a high school athlete anymore. With a massive surge of adrenalin and excitement, I forgot this was a half marathon. Combine that with my competitive spirit and I was seriously speeding. Not such a smart move. But with clear open roadway on a fresh Spring day, there was no holding back.
After the first few miles, the rolling hills brought me back to reality and reminded me this wasn’t a 5K race. I kicked back a gear and settled into my pace. From there, it was smooth sailing (as smooth as one can expect!) and it turned out to be an awesome run. It was amazing to be out there amongst 7,000 other women with the park to ourselves.
So you’re probably wondering why the bloody hell I do this. It’s simple. I’m addicted. It’s the adrenaline, the challenge, the people, the park. Always changing with the seasons and full of inspiration. This is what it’s all about.
Really, the best thing? A day of guilt-free carbs. Totally worth it.
Have an awesome week!
